JOB DESCRIPTION

CEA Hourly Range $26.49 - $36.14

POSITION TITLE:Electrical Inspector

REPORTS TO: Chief Building Inspector

SUPERVISES:------

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Responsible for performing skilled inspections of electrical systems and equipment and for the enforcement of municipal and national electrical codes and standards. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Inspects new and existing wiring and electrical installations in residences, businesses, public and other buildings for conformance with safety standards, laws and ordinances.

Issues permits for electrical work.

Reviews plans, specifications and other data to ensure plans meet the minimum requirements of the electrical code and zoning requirements.

Investigates and resolves complaints of defective electrical installations which are reported as fire and other hazards.

Issues verbal or written orders for the correction of defects and other violations of ordinances.

Reports violations and assists in representing the City at court hearings.

Interprets and reviews codes, standards and departmental regulations, recommending changes as needed.

Prepares daily, annual and other reports of inspections performed covering conditions found, action taken and recommendations made for further action.

Coordinates inspections with specialists as required.

Responsible for uniform application and interpretation of appropriate electrical ordinances and regulations, along with enforcing the energy code.

Conducts final inspections for certificates of occupancy.

Determines if contractors have all the necessary permits and licenses to perform the requested work.

Explains and interprets ordinances and regulations to owners, contractors, government officials and the general public.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

Assists in the effective operation of the office.

Performs other duties as directed or as the situation dictates.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY:

Knowledge of the methods and practices involved in constructing, installing, maintaining and operating

a variety of electrical installations, equipment and appliances.

Knowledge of possible defects and flaws in electrical wiring and application of standard testing devices and corrective measures.

General knowledge of and ability to utilize computers and programs associated with the function of the division.

Ability to detect and locate defective electrical wiring and construction, couples with the ability to determine the stage of construction or installation when defects are more easily found and remedied.

Ability to understand and work from construction and wiring blueprints, drawings and diagrams.

Ability to perform field inspections on new construction, alterations, repairs and remodels within the city limits and the extraterritorial jurisdiction.

Ability to enforce ordinances and other regulations with firmness, tact and impartiality.

Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.

Ability to establish effective working professional relationships with building contractors, owners, engineers, architects, government officials, fellow employees and the general public.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSES:

Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

AND

Five years of experience in electrical work.

Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of hire and maintain it throughout the course of employment.

Must possess a valid journeyman electrician's license.

Must obtain an IAEI or ICC electrical inspector certification within one year of the date of hire.

Must obtain a Nebraska State Class A contractor license within one year of the date of hire.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Work is generally performed outdoors years round, periodically during inclement weather, at construction sites which may be dusty, noisy and hazardous. Job duties require a considerable amount of physical activity, including walking, standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching and climbing. Incumbents must have the ability to transport themselves to and from inspection sites and to lift up to 50 lbs. Incumbents must also possess the coordination and manual dexterity necessary to physically access and maneuver on rough terrain and at construction sites to conduct inspections.
